A Beginner's Guide To Bikini Waxing

Posted on

Self reports that 84 percent of women do some sort of pubic hair grooming. However, if you're new to bikini waxing, the process may seem daunting. Knowing there are different variations can add to the stress. Should you go for a Brazilian wax? Or stick with a basic bikini wax? What's the difference, anyway? When it comes to getting a bikini wax, there are many different options to choose from. Here's a breakdown of the most popular types of bikini waxes so you can make an informed decision about which one is right for you.

Basic Bikini Wax

A basic bikini wax removes hair from outside the panty line and around the top of the thighs. This type of wax is ideal for anyone who wants to tidy up their appearance without revealing too much skin. This is sometimes called an "Americano" or a "Speedo" wax because it involves taking all the hair off that would be seen outside of an American-cut swimsuit or Speedo bottom. This type of waxing is performed while the client lies on their back.

French Bikini Wax

A French bikini wax, sometimes called a "High Leg" wax, takes waxing a step further than a basic bikini wax by removing more hair from the panty line to allow for a high-cut bathing suit bottom.

Brazilian Wax

A Brazilian wax removes all hair from front to back, including everything in between, leaving a small portion of hair commonly referred to as a "triangle" or "landing strip" in the front. This type of wax is ideal for anyone who wants to feel extra confident in a bathing suit or lingerie.

It is important to note that a Brazilian wax requires the client to lie on their back as well as position themselves on their hands and knees so that the waxing technician can reach all the necessary areas.

The Hollywood/Full Monty Bikini Wax

As its names suggest, a Hollywood or Full Monty bikini wax removes everything—that means every single strand of hair from the front, back, and everything in between. This type of wax is also sometimes also referred to as a "Sphynx Cat" wax.

No matter what type of bikini wax you choose, remember that everyone's pain tolerance is different. In addition, many factors, like how often you get waxed and how thick your hair is, can affect how much discomfort you feel during and after the process. If you're feeling particularly nervous about getting waxed, chat with your esthetician beforehand about your concerns. They'll likely be able to give you some helpful tips on how to relax and make the experience as pain-free as possible.
